Soon-to-be-moms and reality stars Kendra Wilkinson and Kourtney Kardashian recently revealed their plans to breast-feed their babies. Both women have undergone breast augmentations in the past, which can be complicated.

In the same interview, Kourtney also expressed her wish to breast-feed despite having breast implants. She says, “They say usually you can [breast-feed with implants]. I want to.” (Read Make Me Heal’s story on Kourtney Kardashian’s breast implants).

New York plastic surgeon Dr. David Shafer says, “Women with breast implants can still breast feed. The implants are placed under the breast and most of the time under the muscle as well. So the glands and ducts are still intact.”

Many are under the impression that having breast implants means that women cannot breast feed, but this isn’t true. The ability to breastfeed depends on the woman, as well as the placement of the implant.

Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Walden explains, “It is very common for women with implants to wish to breastfeed, and many women do go on to breastfeed sucessfully. However, as a first time mom nobody can guarantee Kendra or Kourtney will be able breastfeed. This holds true even for women that do not have implants. Appropriately sized breast implants frequently do not interfere with breastfeeding if placed under the muscle and placed through an inframammary crease incision. Periareolar incisions carry a slightly higher higher risk of loss of nipple sensitivity and potential difficulty with lactation as the surgeon must navigate through the mammary gland to reach the pectoralis muscle.”

Both Kendra and Kourtney are due in December and Make Me Heal wishes them the best of luck in their new roles as moms.
