Activities, Movements & Behaviors - DOs & DON'Ts
From Make Me Heal
There are so many things a person does routinely without much planning or thought...things that are done so often, they are somewhat automatic. Surgery can disrupt your life, temporarily, during the healing process. Certain activities are discouraged for some time, or are difficult to accomplish at various stages of healing. Here is a brief outline of some of those things, and when you might be able to resume them, post-operatively. Please remember this is a general guideline, and you should always check with (and follow) your own doctor's directions. It might also be a good idea to take a list of these things when you have your consult, and ask your doctor's input on your specific case.

Shower
This can depend on the method your surgeon uses to close the incision. Often, one can shower within a day or two of surgery, even with drains in. Washing hair can be a challenge. A soft terry belt is a great way to pin drains on, freeing both hands to bathe.
In the end, only your surgeon can tell you when it will be okay for you to shower. This is usually in one to several days. Please do ask your doctor about this prior to surgery, so that you can plan ahead as needed.
Bath
Incision should be completely closed, scabs healed and fallen off. Again, your doctor will advise you on a specific time frame.
Swimming
This is similar to bathing in the tub, however clorinated water is often preferred over non-clorinated water.
Sex
"When you feel ready", which is generally 2-3 weeks post op. It is advised to be careful choosing positions, and be attentive to your own body's signals. If it hurts, stop.
